Easter Island Man

This was a tribute piece to a man who decided to take up woodcarving at the young age of 83. He presented an unpromising log of pear wood and announced that he wanted to carve an Easter Island Man. He had a go but this was beyond his technical ability to achieve before he died of underlying health problems. Two years after this I found the chewed log in my workshop and decided to complete it for him.

In the short time I knew him I came to understand what an inspirational person he was. He lived every day as if it were his last and tried new stuff at every opportunity. I want to go out like that.
