ABOUT MICHELLE
I am self taught. I have been carving as a hobby since the late 1990’s but due to increasing demand I am now carving professionally.
I carve in a wide variety of hardwoods which I mostly season myself. This provides wood that is not commercially available, with features that when properly incorporated with original and sympathetic designs work together to create special and unique sculptures.

Thorough research enables me to build three-dimensional pose-able images in my head which I can then flexibly use to work freehand with the wood to make the absolute best of its grain, colour and texture whilst not losing sight of the end sculpture. Flowing, clean lines and detail, together with a leaning towards the realistic are strong features of my work.
Whilst I will use machinery to remove larger pieces of waste I prefer to work by hand to capitalise on attractive features or work around less attractive ones naturally occurring in the wood.
Wood is generally an under appreciated and under valued medium especially compared to metal and stone. I am keen to help rectify this within my own work, demonstrating the skills to carve at shows and by passing on my knowledge to others (formally and informally) so that they will enjoy the medium as much as I do.
